What’s new at The Farm Cabins in 2013? Chapel of the Feathered Flock !

We’ve been extremely busy in the new year building rock entrances, storage and horse stalls and with the new building additions we have new members of The Farm family — baby chicks !!! These are not just any chicks they are Heritage poultry from The Sustainable Poultry Network. Our chicks are Barred Plymouth Rock chicks. Bard tells you the type of feathers – striped gray and white or brown and white, and Plymouth Rock tells you where the chickens originated, Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts.

This is very new to me and I am leaning on Peter Karns our Farm manager who went to “chicken school” with the Sustainable Poultry Network last fall. He learned all about chickens – everything we needed to know and we have Jim Adkins the instructor and Specialist for Sustainable Poultry who will help Peter and be our mentor in raising our Heritage chickens. Having Heritage chickens is a huge responsibility. Most importantly we are bound to keep the breed pure so we can pass this gene type on to other chicken farms in the future. We are so excited to be a part of the Sustainable Poultry net work and look forward to working within their framework.

So here is a really interesting tidbit of information Peter told me the other day. You can tell what color eggs a hen will lay – are you ready for this? – by the color of her earlobe ! I know, I didn’t know hens had earlobes either !!!! To be honest I never even thought about their having ears or where they might be placed if they did !!! Our hens will lay mostly brown eggs but some of them might be speckled. And what does all this have to do with the Cabins at The Farm? Around summertime we should be getting eggs and that means our overnight cabin and cottage guests will be able to have fresh eggs in the morning!!!!

Just wait till you see the hen house!! After much thought, we placed the coop way up on the hill next to the bee hives.. on the back of the property. Let me just say Myron outdid himself again! I will post pictures when it is closer to being done, but I think we might need help naming the chicken coop….it looks strangely like a chapel !!! Maybe “The Chicken Chapel” or ” Chapel of the feathered flock”? I think you will enjoy the walk up to visit.

The Bachelor

The Bachelor TV show came to town and we were honored to have them request an evening here at The Farm. It was heartbreaking to have to tell the planner that we were already booked. So I am going to watch this season show to see where the happy couple went for their North Carolina date night.

Rock-Does it Again

That stinker! He got out again. This is round three for “Rock” breaking out of his fencing, Thanksgiving we are sure he was hunting for something special for dinner so we think he and “lady” decided to go foraging! They found the bee hives and did quite a bit of damage there- at first since we heard from neighbors on the opposite side and down the road that a bear had been sighted maybe Rock didn’t participate in the bee hive invasion of privacy- but also all evidence pointed to no well-bread bear would ever leave honey behind.

So round 3- we brought Rock and Love back to their pasture with new fencing in place only to have Rock escape this time thought the barn door being left ajar while their caretaker was feeding everyone else. Rock again found his way to the back pasture and the bee hives but apparently the bees had done an adequate job and Rock had learned respect for his bugging friends. So he is still hanging out in the back pasture but not as happy alone as he though. We took love over to keep him company until we can get all the fencing reinforced for big boys like Rock.

Tuggar Tales visits The Farm Cabins

Tuggar Tales has his own website and blog so along with his owner, they came to visit us here at The Farm Cabins two times. Once on their way to NJ to the beach and then on their way home. Rock was interested in the 8 mo old puppy, but then Rock is so huge he is interested in anything small that moves !!! Thanks Tuggar for coming to visit us and we hope you come again.

Rock Meets Tugger of Tugger Tails

Tugger is a 10 month old golden retriever owned by Brennan Clipp. You can read about his adventures on his blog at tuggertails.com. Rock invited Tugger to come for a photo shoot last week when Tugger was staying in one of The Farms cottages, the Parker House. The Farm has 5 cabins and cottages on the property as well as our event center. ( www.thefarmcabins.com and www.thefarmevents.com) Here are a few pictures of their first meeting….

Tugger had never met or seen a horse before, nevertheless a horse that is 19 hands 2 inches ( 1 hand equals 4 inches) he was a little unsure of what this huge thing was and as you can see nothing really phases Rock! When your that big its hard to intimidate you.

Thank you Tugger for coming to visit us. We will watch your blog for more of your adventures and we hope you had a great trip home !

The Farm welcomes Tugger

Tugger ( see www.tuggertails.com ) came to Asheville last weekend and we were pleased to host him at our Carriage House on Patton Avenue. Tugger has become a star doing films as well as appearances. We follow him on Facebook and have enjoyed his adventures. Tugger will be coming back through Asheville after his beach trip and will stay at The Farm the 9th of Sept. We hope he and Rock, our Belgium, will be able to have pictures together.

We have become “The” Honeymoon Cabins to beat. !!!!! Clean, 2 fireplaces ( 1 inside and the other on the back covered porch), Jacuzzi tub ( inside), fabulous linens with sheets

like no other in town, attention to details is our middle name when it comes to

our cabins and cottages. Here is what one of the grooms who stayed with us this week had to say :

just wanted to personally thank you for the champagne and the rose petals on the walkway to the cabin. It was breathtaking. My wife and I loved it and enjoyed every moment that we spent there. We are planning to make visiting the Farms a part of our new family life. Thanks for everything.

Fall beauty in the NC mountains is amazing

What a great place to spend a fall day…in a cabin, in the mountains of North Carolina with flaming red, gold, yellow and orange leaves swirling all around you

. Just imagine sitting in our Amish rockers or curled up on the willow couch on the cabin porch , fireplace blazing, snuggled up with your honey and a warm drink!!!!! That's what your missing if you haven't been here to experience it for yourself….so what are you waiting for? Fall is : mountains, sparkling leaves, that damp leaf smell that warms your soul, hikes, jackets, long distance views that have been hidden by summers leaves. Sounds like Romance to me !!!
